Home Highpoints

State: North Carolina

Peak Name: Mt Mitchell

After spending a few days in Asheville, NC, on the way back home Kaitlyn and myself stopped at Mt Mitchell, the tallest point on the east side of the Mississippi. It had been rainy and gross all weekend, and that continued into Sunday. The drive up on the Blue Ridge Parkway was nearly entirely in the clouds, with visibility limited to just a few hundred feet. As we climbed in the car to the top of the mountain, the clouds remained, frustratingly blocking any chance of a view.

The climb to the top from the parking lot was easy, with a concrete trail and plenty of other folks around. We stopped for lunch in Little Switzerland, and the fog did not lift until we were back on I-40 way past the tallest point in the Appalachians. I’ll probably be back soon, its the closest and tallest state highpoint and I’d love to see it with much clearer views.
